Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Grant Supports Literacy Program at Boston Collegiate Charter School
Boston, MA, January 11, 2016 – The Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp., a nonprofit, tax-exempt entity established by attorneys from the law firm of Brown Rudnick LLP, awarded a Community Grant to the Boston Collegiate Charter School in Dorchester, MA to purchase e-readers for the school’s newly renovated library.
Paul Sipes, 6th grade reading teacher, lower school librarian, and grant applicant, said, “As a teacher who instructs one hundred 6th graders each year, I see how the absence of e-readers hurts our struggling readers. Many read well, but most do not; in fact, many read far below grade level. Our school's mission is to prepare each student for college. But if a child can't read well by the 6th grade, the chances of that child graduating high school plummet with each successive year. We are grateful for the Foundation’s support to help us fill this gap.”
Al Wallis, Executive Director of the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp, commented, “We are pleased to support reading teacher Paul Sipes and Boston Collegiate Charter School to help ensure more of their 5th and 6th grade students become active, enthusiastic readers.”
Created to support front-line educators who often do not have a voice in funding decisions, the Community Grants subsidize small, concrete projects, which will improve inner-city education within Boston, Hartford, London, Orange County, Providence, New York, or Washington DC within the coming year. The Foundation will generally consider grant applications monthly and award grants in an amount totaling not more than $2000 in any one month. The grant applications and an explanation of the program can be found at http://www.brownrudnickcenter.com/foundation/community-grant.
