Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Grant Supports Online Reading Program in Mattapan, MA Kindergarten Class
Boston, MA, January 11, 2016 – The Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp., a nonprofit, tax-exempt entity established by attorneys from the law firm of Brown Rudnick LLP, awarded a Community Grant to Mildred Ave K-8 School in Mattapan, MA to support a kindergarten literacy program. Grant dollars will purchase two laptop computers that will provide access to online storybooks for the children to read.
According to Margaret LaBonte, Mildred Ave K-8 School kindergarten teacher and grant applicant, “As a kindergarten teacher, I believe I put my students on the path to becoming productive, educated adults. Literacy is the cornerstone of their success, and at the same time, we recognize that children are exposed to technology at a very early age. Our online reading program will bring the two mediums together to support students’ reading fluency and comprehension in an engaging and culturally relevant format.”
Al Wallis, Executive Director of the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp, commented, “We applaud Mildred Ave K-8 School teachers Margaret LaBonte for thinking creatively about how to engage students in reading. The Foundation is pleased to support this online literacy program.”
Created to support front-line educators who often do not have a voice in funding decisions, the Community Grants subsidize small, concrete projects, which will improve inner-city education within Boston, Hartford, London, Orange County, Providence, New York, or Washington DC within the coming year. The Foundation will generally consider grant applications monthly and award grants in an amount totaling not more than $2000 in any one month. The grant applications and an explanation of the program can be found at http://www.brownrudnickcenter.com/foundation/community-grant.
